Off the books : a novel / Soma Mei Sheng Frazier. - New York : Henry Holt and Company, 2024. - [6], 216, [1] strona ; 23 cm.
Książka w języku angielskim. Recent Dartmouth dropout Mei, in search of a new direction in life, drives a limo to make ends meet. Her grandfather convinces her to allow her customers to pay under the table, and before she knows it, she is working as a routine chauffeur for sex workers. Mei does her best to mind her own business, but her knack for discretion soon leads her on a life-changing trip from San Francisco to Syracuse with a new client. Handsome and reserved, Henry piques Mei’s interest. Toting an enormous black suitcase with him everywhere he goes, he’s more concerned with taking frequent breaks than making good time on the road. When Mei discovers Henry's secret, she has no choice but to confront him. What Henry reveals rocks her to her core and shifts this once casual, transactional road trip to one of moral stakes and dangerous consequences. An original take on the great American road trip, Off the Books is a beautifully crafted coming-of-age story that showcases the resilience of the human spirit and the power of doing the right thing. The spirit of Frazier’s characters will stay with readers long after they have arrived at their destination.

Never simple : a memoir / Liz Scheier. - First edition. - New York : Henry Holt and Company, 2022. - XIV, [2], 271, [1] strona : ilustracje ; 24 cm.
Książka w języku angielskim. Liz Scheier’s darkly funny and touching memoir of growing up in '90s Manhattan with a brilliant, mendacious, single mother. Scheier’s mother Judith was a news junkie, a hilarious storyteller, a fast-talking charmer you couldn’t look away from, a single mother whose devotion crossed the line into obsession, and - when in the grips of the mental illness that plagued every day of her life - a violent and abusive liar whose hold on reality was shaky at best. On an uneventful afternoon when Scheier was eighteen, her mother sauntered into the room to tell her two important things: one, she had been married for most of Scheier's life to a man she'd never heard of, and two, the man she’d told Scheier was her father was entirely fictional. She’d made him up. Those two big lies were the start, but not the end; it took dozens of smaller lies to support them, and by the time she was done she had built a farcical, half-true life for the two of them, from fake social security number to fabricated husband. "Never Simple" is the story of learning to survive and, finally, trying to save a complicated parent, as feared as she is loved, and as self-destructive as she is adoring.

Książka w języku angielskim. Przez osiemnaście miesięcy autor przeprowadził ponad dwieście rozmów z pracownikami Białego Domu, członkami amerykańskiej administracji i samym Trumpem, dzięki czemu dogłębnie poznał kulisy działania najbardziej kontrowersyjnej prezydentury naszych czasów. Michael Wolff opowiada pasjonującą historię o tym, w jaki sposób Trump rozpoczął kadencję tak nieprzewidywalną i wybuchową jak on sam.

Książka w języku angielskim. A landmark history of one hundred years of war waged against the Palestinians from the foremost US historian of the Middle East, told through pivotal events and family history In 1899, Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, mayor of Jerusalem, alarmed by the Zionist call to create a Jewish national home in Palestine, wrote a letter aimed at Theodore Herzl: the country had an indigenous people who would not easily accept their own displacement. He warned of the perils ahead, ending his note, 'in the name of God, let Palestine be left alone.' Thus Rashid Khalidi, al-Khalidi`s great-great-nephew, begins this sweeping history, the first general account of the conflict told from an explicitly Palestinian perspective. Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members--mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists--The Hundred Years` War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age. He highlights the key episodes in this colonial campaign, from the 1917 Balfour Declaration to the destruction of Palestine in 1948, from Israel`s 1982 invasion of Lebanon to the endless and futile peace process. Original, authoritative, and important, The Hundred Years` War on Palestine is not a chronicle of victimization, nor does it whitewash the mistakes of Palestinian leaders or deny the emergence of national movements on both sides. In reevaluating the forces arrayed against the Palestinians, it offers an illuminating new view of a conflict that continues to this day.

Książka w języku angielskim. The End of Bias is a transformative, groundbreaking exploration into how we can eradicate unintentional bias and discrimination, the great challenge of our age. Discussions of unconscious bias typically focus on the problem, not on solutions. But how do we eradicate the unintentional prejudices that clash with our values and wreak havoc across medicine, the workplace, education, policing, and beyond? To find out, award-winning journalist and writer Jessica Nordell undertook a global search for solutions. The culmination of fifteen years' immersion in the subject, The End of Bias: A Beginning explores how bias ends: the police unit in California where new incentives improved police behavior and decreased both arrests and violent crime, the checklist used by doctors that erased gender disparities in treatment, the media intervention that reduced religious intolerance in France. Weaving gripping stories with scientific research and exquisite writing, Nordell paints riveting portraits of those leading change and interrogates her own biases with candor and insight.
